Swift Basecamp 2021: What’s new in the popular crossover camping vehicle?

2020 Swift Basecamp Special Edition

The popular Swift Basecamp has striking new features for 2020 with the release of a Special Edition.

Words by Will Hawkins

The Swift Basecamp came out in 2016 and caught the attention of people who wanted a fun, practical caravan that worked well for outdoor adventures. Basecamp fans soon got together to share their enthusiasm for the Basecamp, and Swift paid attention to their feedback.

For 2020, Swift has an updated Special Edition Basecamp based on that feedback which has distinctive changes.

Brighter at the back!

The most noticeable change is the wide rear, which now includes a window. This brightens the only subdued area of a light and airy caravan. And, for an outdoor orientated vehicle the redesigned door enhances the dynamic feel of the Basecamp.

The rear door was already a big benefit of owning a Basecamp. It makes getting bikes in and out, for example, when you need to move to your next destination a cinch.

More storage

Swift Basecamp Special Edition 2020 internal

The Basecamp is surprisingly spacious inside, and the design belies its small appearance on the outside. For two people, the Swift Basecamp is perfect and it has plenty of storage for food, clothing and equipment.

New for 2020, to enhance the storage inside, are expandable storage pockets, which sit on ‘soft-touch wall pads’ at the front of the living space.

The pockets address an issue in previous Basecamp versions which was where to store items like maps, magazines, books or iPads when on-site.

Distinctive design

Aside from the new door and expandable pockets, Swift has added new touches to enhance the eye-catching Basecamp appearance.

The interior has a new ‘Tangerine’ design scheme which matches the removable storage bags. The new design makes the Basecamp look more like a cool studio flat than standard caravan interior designs.

Outside, there is a new ‘chequered flag’ graphic design on the panels, which make the Basecamp even more distinctive on the road and on a pitch.

Plus, with the new 16-inch ‘Rim Fire’ alloy wheels add to the feel that you’re towing a caravan which has more in common with a sports car than it does with a home on wheels.

The big splash from Swift at the show is their Special Edition Basecamp ‘crossover camping vehicle.’

The 2020 model sports new decal design on the outside and alloy wheels that give the Basecamp an energetic dimension. The new design might appeal to the people Swift wants to attract to the Basecamp, namely outdoor adventurers who want year round comfort.

However, the main change is the new, wide rear door which now has a window. Swift made the change after listening Basecamp fans who visited their factory earlier this year. It’s a big improvement to let more light in, and to make the compact Basecamp feel more spacious.

In the living space, Swift added flexible pockets at the front so you can store items like iPads and magazines which you might want to stow when you’ve stopped using them, or grab at night when you’re in bed.
